Thethird film in our blog series is ‘The Great Escape’ (1963) directed by John Sturges. Based on the biography The Great Escape (1950) by Australian ex-serviceman Paul Brickhill, the film depicts the true story of the Allied airmen who escaped from the German prisoner of war camp Stalag Luft III in Poland in March of 1944.

TheGreat Escape. The American war film The Great Escape (1963) was loosely based on the true story of an ambitious escape by Allied prisoners of war (POWs) during World War II. Widely considered a classic, the movie was especially known for the direction by John Sturges and for a cast that included Steve McQueen in one of his defining roles.
